Long-term financial protection for a family
The Basics

What is Life Insurance?

Life insurance is a contract under which an insurer agrees to pay a defined benefit to your nominee if the life assured dies during the policy term, in exchange for premiums paid by you. Some products also provide a maturity benefit if the policyholder survives the term.

The purpose is straightforward: to replace, at least in part, the financial support that would be lost if the person the household depends on were no longer there. What varies between products is the structure - how long cover runs, what is paid, and whether any savings element is attached.

A common starting point Many people begin with pure protection - cover sized to their family's needs - and treat savings and investment decisions separately.

Why Life Insurance is Important

The value of a life policy shows up at exactly the moment a household is least able to absorb a financial shock.

  • Provides a financial cushion for dependants who rely on your income
  • Can help a family continue servicing a home loan or other liabilities
  • Supports longer-term commitments such as children's education
  • Gives a family time to make decisions rather than being forced into them
  • Premiums may qualify for tax benefits under applicable tax laws, subject to conditions

Tax treatment depends on prevailing tax law and individual circumstances, and may change. Please consult a qualified tax adviser for your own position.

Options

Life Protection Solutions

The main structures available, and what each is generally intended to do.

Term Insurance

Pure protection for a fixed term, generally offering the highest cover for a given premium.

  • Sum assured payable to the nominee on death during the term
  • Usually no maturity benefit on survival in pure term plans
  • Premiums typically lower at younger entry ages

Life Protection Plans

Policies combining life cover with a savings or maturity component.

  • Cover plus a defined maturity or savings element
  • Premiums are generally higher than pure term for the same cover
  • Returns and benefits depend entirely on the specific product

Family Financial Protection

Structuring cover around the people who actually depend on the income.

  • Cover sized against income, liabilities and dependants
  • Options for benefits paid as a lump sum or in instalments
  • Riders may be available for additional defined events

Long-Term Planning

Cover reviewed against life stages rather than fixed once and forgotten.

  • Policy term aligned to when dependants become financially independent
  • Cover revisited after marriage, children or a new loan
  • Nomination details kept current throughout the term
Before You Decide

Factors to Consider

  • Dependants - who relies on your income today, and for how long
  • Liabilities - home loans and other borrowings that would remain
  • Existing cover - including any provided through an employer
  • Policy term - how many years the cover genuinely needs to run
  • Premium affordability - a lapsed policy provides no protection at all
  • Riders - optional add-ons, their conditions and their cost
  • Disclosure - health, occupation, lifestyle and existing policies

How to Choose the Right Coverage

  1. Define the purpose. Income replacement, loan protection, or both.
  2. Work out the gap. Needs, minus existing cover and liquid savings.
  3. Set the term. Usually until dependants are financially independent.
  4. Choose the structure. Pure protection or a plan with a savings element.
  5. Read the exclusions and conditions. Including clauses that apply early in the term.
  6. Declare everything accurately. This is what protects the claim.
  7. Name and update your nominee. Then tell your family the policy exists.

FAQs

Life Insurance - Frequently Asked Questions

General information to help you frame the right questions before choosing cover.

What is term insurance?

Term insurance is a form of life insurance that provides cover for a fixed period. If the life assured dies during that term while the policy is in force, the sum assured is generally payable to the nominee, subject to the policy terms. Most pure term plans have no maturity value if the policyholder survives the term.

How much life cover should I consider?

There is no single correct figure. People commonly consider income replacement for dependants, outstanding loans, planned future expenses such as education, and existing savings. Comparing those against cover you already hold gives a starting point for discussion.

What is the difference between term insurance and savings-linked plans?

A pure term plan is designed primarily to provide a death benefit at a comparatively lower premium. Savings- or investment-linked plans combine life cover with a maturity or investment component, and typically carry higher premiums. Which is appropriate depends on your objective.

Does a life insurance policy have a waiting period?

Life policies generally do not have waiting periods in the way health policies do, but most include specific conditions - for example clauses relating to death by suicide within a defined initial period. Riders attached to a policy may carry their own conditions.

Why does accurate disclosure matter so much?

Premium and acceptance are based on the information declared - age, health, occupation, lifestyle habits and existing cover. Incorrect or incomplete disclosure can give the insurer grounds to reject a claim later, which defeats the purpose of the policy.

What is a nominee, and can it be changed?

A nominee is the person you name to receive the policy benefit. Insurers generally allow the nominee to be updated during the policy term by submitting the required form. Keeping the nomination current is an easily overlooked but important step.

Can I hold more than one life insurance policy?

Holding cover from more than one insurer is generally possible. Existing cover normally has to be declared when applying for a new policy, as insurers consider total cover across all policies during underwriting.
